When it comes to maintaining good oral health, finding an affordable option to pay for dental care can be a challenge. Many people find themselves caught between two popular options: dental insurance and dental discount plans.
Understanding the differences between these two options can help you make an informed decision about what’s best for you and your family. Our independent insurance agents at McKnight & McKnight explain.
What is Dental Insurance?
Dental insurance works much like health insurance. It involves paying a monthly premium, and once a deductible has been met, the insurance takes responsibility for covering either all or a portion of approved dental costs, up to a certain limit.
There are usually several components involved with dental insurance, including deductibles, co-pays, waiting periods, and policy maximums.
The coverage provided often varies depending on the nature of the care – preventive care, such as cleanings and check-ups, is usually fully or almost fully covered, while more comprehensive care like root canals or crowns often requires a patient contribution.
Dental insurance plans typically come in three main types:
- Dental Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)
- Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs)
- Dental indemnity plans
Each of these plans has its own unique set of features and limitations, such as network restrictions, deductibles, yearly benefit maximums, and waiting periods for non-preventive care.
The cost of dental insurance premiums can vary significantly, typically ranging from $20-$50 per month for individuals and $50-$150 for families. If your employer provides the plan, they may cover a portion of the premium. However, if you purchase the plan yourself, the cost falls entirely on you.
It’s worth noting that the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) premium subsidies do not apply to adult stand-alone dental plans.
What are Dental Discount Plans?
On the other end of the spectrum, dental discount plans operate differently than dental insurance. They do not cover dental expenses per se but instead offer discounted rates from participating dentists.
These plans usually come without deductibles, waiting periods, or annual maximums, making them a potentially flexible and straightforward option for dental care.
The discounts offered by these plans typically range between 10% and 60% for standard dental work. These plans can be particularly beneficial if you anticipate needing extensive dental work, as even minor discounts on numerous significant dental procedures can more than cover the membership fees.
Dental discount plans can be attractive because they offer immediate savings and do not involve claim forms or waiting periods. Unlike dental insurance, which can have a cap on coverage, a dental discount plan allows you to use it as often as needed.

Making the Choice: Dental Insurance or Dental Discount Plan?
While dental insurance provides comprehensive coverage, it can be more costly and involves dealing with deductibles and maximums. On the other hand, dental discount plans offer an affordable alternative with immediate savings, but the discounts are only available with participating dentists.
The choice between a dental discount plan and dental insurance is not one-size-fits-all, therefore it’s essential to evaluate your specific needs and circumstances before coming to a decision. Understanding the ins and outs of both options is key to making the choice that best fits your situation.
